2011: We are re-living the 1980s!

Having just researched the 1980s for my recent series of blog posts looking at that era year-by-year, it seems to me that, in 2011, we are (bizarrely) re-living the entire decade in just one year – this year! That’s my thesis anyway! Here’s my evidence:

In the 1980s the UK had a Conservative government that introduced highly unpopular public sector spending cuts

In 2011 the UK has a Conservative government that is introducing highly unpopular public sector spending cuts

****

In the 1980s England suffered major riots in Tottenham, Handsworth and Toxteth

In 2011 England has just suffered major riots in Tottenham, Handsworth and Toxteth

****

In the 1980s Rupert Murdoch was in the headlines for a huge controversy (the Wapping dispute)

In 2011 Rupert Murdoch is in the headlines for a huge controversy (the phone-hacking scandal)

****

In the 1980s the UK suffered a major recession

In 2011 the UK is suffering a major recession

****

In the 1980s the UK suffered record levels of unemployment

In 2011 the UK is suffering record levels of unemployment

****

In the 1980s there was a massive stock market crash (Black Monday)

In 2011 there has been a massive stock market crash (this week)

****

In the 1980s one of the biggest TV shows was Dallas

In 2011 there are plans to bring Dallas back to the small screen (with the same cast)

****

In the 1980s there was war against the Taliban in Afghanistan

In 2011 there is war against the Taliban in Afghanistan

****

In the 1980s there were terrible famines in Africa

In 2011 there are terrible famines in Africa

****

I suppose the appropriate response is to realise that History is indeed an important subject and to consider the wise words of the Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana – shown in the image below:

Incidentally, the recent riots in the UK were actually predicted in my novel, LOVE, GUDRUN ENSSLIN (published in Sept 2010 – and written some time before that). See Page 77 if you have a copy! Otherwise, if you’d like to buy a copy – it’s out now in paperback on Amazon (and other online retailers) and as an e-book for Kindle (…gentle hint hint amigos!)
